Mitt Serves Up Roast Pig

HIALEAH--Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney received a warm, Cuban-American welcome -- complete with the requisite lechón -- Sunday afternoon in Hialeah, Miami-Dade County's most heavily Hispanic, Republican stronghold.
Speaking to a crowd of a couple hundred outside Casa Marin, a traditional Hialeah political spot, Romney spoke about his love for his family, the military, freedom and the United States, repeating important themes for older, Cuban-American voters that form the base of Miami-Dade's Hispanic Republican electorate.
"Gifts to people who are fundamentally evil are always accepted and never returned," Romney said, criticizing President Barack Obama's policy toward Cuba, which allowed for more remittances and travel to the island.
The president is full of "excuses" for the stalled economy, Romney said -- and accused his chief GOP primary rival, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, of relying on "excuses" to justify his apparently slowing momentum in Florida.
"The reason you find it hard to connect to the speaker is you know the past 15 years he's been working in Washington," Romney said. "You want someone who is not part of Washington."
Before his 10-minute speech, Romney was introduced by his wife, Ann, who spoke about the importance of family, and their youngest son, Craig, who has appeared with Romney all week, speaking Spanish to the Hispanic crowds. "My father doesn't speak Spanish," Craig Romney said in Spanish. "But he does speak the language of the economy."
After the speech, Romney stepped into the packed Casa Marin restaurant, where another hundred people or so waited. As he entered the restaurant, several older gentlemen played their guitars and sang Guantanamera.
Romney was invited to carve a slow-roasted, suckling pig -- Cuban lechón -- which he did, with a knife and tongs. He posed for photos next to the pig and gave a bite to U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Then Romney signed autographs and worked the room, where folks could not be persuaded to remain seated. He blew a kiss to a woman who blew one at him first. Another woman carried an "Arriba con Mitt" (Up with Mitt) sign. A third woman said it was "unfair" when Romney did not come to her table.
Romney had been welcomed by a gaggle of Hialeah Republicans, including Mayor Carlos Hernandez, most city council members and former state Sen. Rudy Garcia. Also on stage with Romney: Ros-Lehtinen, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, former Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Reps. Connie Mack and Mary Bono Mack.
Lincoln Diaz-Balart told reporters before Romney's speech that Hispanics who favored Romney's rival, John McCain, in 2008 would this time cast their ballots for Romney. "People have gotten to know him. They know that he is our friend," he said. "They trust Ileana, Mario and me. They know that he is listening to us."

HIALEAH, Fla. – Mitt Romney for days has pummeled Newt Gingrich with criticism, over his ties to Freddie Mac, over his long tenure in Washington, over his ethics violation as House speaker.

Now, the increasingly confident former Massachusetts governor has turned to a touch of teasing.

“I saw Speaker Gingrich -- he’s a nice man -- I saw him on TV this morning,” Romney told a crowd of several hundred here in a parking lot outside the Casa Marin Restaurant. “He was describing his excuses and why he wasn’t doing so well here in Florida.”

“He’s talking about me and he’s looking for some kind of excuse, but I’m afraid the real reason he hasn’t been successful connecting with the people of Florida is because of his message.”

He then explained to the crowd that the reason they couldn’t connect with Gingrich was because he was unlike them: the consummate political insider who consulted for companies like Freddie Mac, the mortgage giant blamed in part for the housing crisis that hit Florida hard.

“I don’t think you change Washington by having the same people just take different seats, all right?” Romney said. “You’ve got to change the people. I’ve not spent time in Washington, I spent my life in the private sector.”

4500 Fans Attend Rockabilly Show
CALGARY, Canada--Rockabilly music--a combination of rock and roll and hillbilly music--with the band instruments consisting of guitars and drums, seemed to have more appeal to Calgary audiences than either the straight rock and roll show which appeared here earlier this year or the hillbilly shows which frequently appear here.
The only unfortunate part about this show was the timing of the appearance of the star performer, Sonny James. The audience appeared to have been worn out keeping time with the fast-moving music with foot stomping and hand clapping and by the time the show's star made his appearance, the lanky crooner did not receive the full applause which he deserved.
Gene Vincent, Bobby Helms, Bobby Lord and Jean Chapel, performing during the first half of the show, captured their audience with their Elvis Presley style of singing and guitar playing. Bobby Lord, in particular, did a hilarious take-off on "The Pelvis."

MADISON, Tenn. (AP)--Somehow, everything began in Texarkana, just before the matinee break.
It began with a big boy with sideburns and smoky eyes who sang and twitched and slapped a guitar like a bongo drum.
Although the afternoon house couldn't hear the boy's words too plain, it understood what he was singing about. Adults squirmed self consciously. The kids pounded the seat tops in rhythmic sympathy and finally, inevitably, the girls started screaming.
'A Real Live One'
From his seat near the fire exit, "Colonel" Thomas A. Parker said to the man next to him. "I'm going to check that boy. He's a real live one."
Backstage a few encores later, Col. Parker--veteran of a thousand and one sideshows, peepshows, boat shows, one night stands and press parties--met Elvis Aron Presley, the sad-voiced, slow-eyed boy with the trick knee.
The results of the union are history. They made 1956 the year of the hound dog. They took the pelvis out of anatomy books and splashed it across a million television sets. They filled juke boxes and caused family conferences. They provided the greatest passion for sideburns since Rudolph Valentino.
Almost A Million
"When I found Elvis," said Parker between fat and happy puffs of a short cigar, "the boy had nothing but a million dollars worth of talent. Now he has a million dollars...well, almost a million anyway."
As Presley's business manager, Col. Parker (he says he won his honorary rank by virtue of friendship with the governors of Tennessee and Louisiana) has in one year parlayed Presley into a 20 million dollar a year commodity. Gross, that is.
A lot of the Hollywood and Broadway-wise types predicted that Presley wouldn't stay long with Parker after the money started rolling in, that he'd take on an agent with offices bathed in ankle-deep carpeting and decorated with upholstered blondes.
But Elvis stuck and is sticking.
"Col. Parker is the kind of person I've been raised with," Elvis said during a recent stopover at the Parker home. "I know I'm getting a square deal with him. Some of those Hollywood fellas give me the willies."
And says Parker: "Presley is a good boy. He is a good showman and--despite some of the things people write about him-- he's no screwball. I never have to worry that he will be in a drunk tank at show time or anything like that. He doesn't drink or smoke. About the only thing he does that I worry about is he bites his finger. But then nobody looks at Elvis's fingernails.
"Tries Hard'
"A lot of folks want to find something to pin on the kid. They find it hard to accept the fact that Presley offstage is like most 21 year-old fellows. He has a few dates, takes care of his folks and tries hard to live right."
Immediately prior to the advent of Elvis, Parker, 47, managed Eddie Arnold, the Tennessee Plowboy. At various times, he has also handled Hank Snow, Gene Austin, Roy Acuff, Tex Ritter and a string of other country musicians.

MADISON, Tenn. (AP)--Operating out of his 11-room home here, Parker has arranged Presley's personal appearances, his movie-making, his television performances and his fortune. He has sold thousands of such diverse items as Elvis Presley lipstick, makeup kit, loafer shoes, jacket, sweaters, T-shirts, song books, Presley picture albums and whatever else "the kids will spend a buck on..."
Until recently 4,000 letters a day addresses to Elvis by members of his fan club flooded the Madison post office. Parker last month transferred this part of the operation to Hollywood.
"We have been good for each other," Parker admits, "but don't let anyone tell you I made the boy what he is. The kids are the ones who made Elvis. Without them, he'd still be driving a truck."

CASTLE AIR FORCE BASE, Merced Co.--Screen starlet Natalie Wood, toying with a strawberry ice cream in the Officers Club here, thinks rock and roll singer Elvis Presley has a "real fine voice, is a great showman and a fine fellow," but romance is not for her right now.
The 5 foot 2 inch miss had just come off the set of Bomber 52 which is being filmed at Castle.
"Elvis and I are just good friends," she smiled. "I admire his singing and I think he has a real fine voice. I've never seen him do any of those gyrations or bumps and grinds they say he does, so I can't comment on that.
"But he is a fine guy. We've dated together a few times. Nothing serious. He did a picture in Hollywood and that's how I met him."
Friendly Visit
Well, what about that flight to Memphis, Tenn., a short time back to see him?
"Well, golly. There was nothing to that until everybody made such a big fuss. His folks asked me to visit, so I flew down. I decided to take the name Mollie Cruthers. I made that up and it worked just fine. That is, until we got to Memphis. A lot of people followed Elvis who had come down to the plane to meet me. And then the word got around and much ado was made about nothing."

Belafonte Denies Calypso Role

NEW YORK (UP)--Harry Belafonte, riding on the crest of the new calypso craze, wants no part of it.
"Listen, I'm a singer, period. I sing all types of folk material--English, Irish, Israeli, from every section of the world. I don't believe in cultish and I don't want to be known as the guy who put the nail in the coffin of rock and roll," he said.
"As a matter of fact, my two big records right now aren't calypso at all--even though everybody seems to have hun that tag on them. One, 'Jamaica Farewell' is a West Indian folk ballad. The other, 'Day-O,' is a West Indian work song."
It's no secret in the trade that Belafonte, who has been around for 10 years, suddenly has emerged as number one challenger to Elvis Presley for the title of hottest singer in the business.
According to RCA Victor, Belafonte's recent album of calypso in the L-P and E-P versions has gone over the million point in sales, a phenomenal mark for a long-playing waffle. Each of his other albums--"Mark Twain" and "Belafonte"--has moved past the half million pole.
What's more, within the past few weeks, Belafonte has hit the charts with three best-selling singles--"Jamaica Farewell", "Mary's Boy Child" and "Day-O," the last a tune which other performers have cut under the title, "The Banana Boat Song."
"Calypso, tru calypso, is a healthy music," said Belafonte. "It treats of tropical events with a healthy irony and has a free-swinging style. It's kind of living newspaper.
"The trouble is, I'm afraid the same thing is going to happen to calypso that happened to so-called rock and roll. It's going to become a caricature of itself once the fast buck guys hop on it."
We have a lot of sham calypso in the past, said Belafonte. "You remember the Andrew Sisters' 'Rum and Coca Cola"' That was supposed to be calypso," snorted Belafonte. "But it was just synthetic.
"It was phony in the same way that 'Somebody Bad Stole De Wedding Bell' was. Both are departures from the true calypso idiom in terms of melodic structure, story quality and treatment."
"One thing I want to make clear. I'm going to go on singing true calypso as I see it.--just as I intend to go on singing every other kind of music that carries truth in it.
"And even if phony, synthetic, cliche calypso material floods the market--and it looks like it might--they're not going to get me to sing it. Or, pose in one of those straw hats."

Teen-age movie idol Tab Hunter, a blond, handsome Hollywood hero, is now a singer. His recording of "Young Love" has raced to the heights of popular polls all over the nation and the success of his new undertaking has set show business back on its heels. Fact is, Tab might prove to be a better singer than he is an actor.
It all began when disc jockey Howard Miller of Chicago witnessed the reactions of teen-agers (and adults) to Tab during a personal appearance in that city. Miller immediately suggested to Randy Wood, former owner and founder of Dot Records, that they might come up with a good commercial record.
In subsequent talks with Tab, Wood found him so enthusiastic over the prospect of cutting a record, he decided to gamble on Tab's voice having "that something" that sells a record. Tab was extyremely unsure in his mind whether or not he could do it, so he and Wood agreed that if nothing came out of the recording session, the record would not be released.
SOUNDED BETTER
The session was held Saturday, Dec. 15 in Hollywood with Wood supervisiong and Billy Vaughn, Dot recording artist and musical director for the company, conducting the orchestra. When they heard the playback on "Young Love" they were pretty sure that this was a hit. Tab called his agent right away and his comment was, "Well, it sounds a lot better than I thought it would sound."
Wood, too, was excited over the record. The result was that he and the crew labored both Saturday and Sunday, cutting disks that totaled more than 100,000 by Monday night. They were shipped out to distributors immediately and the dealer and public reaction was sensational. On Tuesday, Wood said the phones at Dot were jumping off the walls with requests for more disks of "Young Love."

Tab spent part of that Sunday at Wood's house in Beverly Hills, listening to his record over and over, still unable to quite believe that he had become, almost overnight, a vocalist.

The much-maligned music of Elvis Presley, blamed for everything from juvenile deliquency to disturbing the peace, bestirs a popular member of the clergy to call a "cease-fire" among the bullish detractors of rock 'n' roll.
The vociferous defender of the Rev. Alvin Kershaw, who knows enough about jazz to have won $32,000 on the "$64,000 Question," and for the life of him, he can't fathom how we can all go on being so wrong about what he calls "a true American art form"--even when Presley sings it.
"Rock and roll has a healthy effect on youth," the Episcopal clergyman stoutly maintains, "if only for the reason it takes our young people away from the commercial and sentimental drivel of today's pop music, in which they find only unreal idealizations."
It's Evangelical
As current host of the CBS television religious-dramatic series, "Look Up and Live," Mr. Kershaw has been receiving buckets of mail from churchgoers who register anxiety over their children's devotion to the music Presley dispenses with physical abandon. His answers to them are unequivocal.
"Rock and roll is far closer to the evangelical meeting than to to the burlesque house," he tells his audience. "It has primitive religious bases, highly similar to the gospel singers' 'state of ecstasy'. Through rock and roll, white people have begun to enjoy Negro rhythm and blues 'race' records, and this type of music could be the bridge over which young people move toward serious identification with jazz and life."
It's Mr. kershaw's educated opinion that youth's interest is rock and roll is a reflection of an ambivalent period in our time. Within the syncopating beat of the musical form, youth finds release for emotions.
Warns Parents
"I am sure most parents are unaware of it," said Mr. Kershaw, "but they are endangering an already slim thread of communication with their children by attempts to prohibit rock and roll. They are misinterpreting a child's need for emotional release as a threat against their own authority, which is ridiculous. Reaction to Presley is the same type of thing that greeted Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw in the '30s."
In Petersborough, N.H., where Mr. Kershaw is minister of the All Saints Episcopal Church, he recently quieted the community's furor over a scheduled rock 'n' roll dance and concert by "Fats" Domino in nearby Manchester. The town's police chief had broadcast an appeal to parents over the radio to keep their children home and bar future engagements by such artists. In the heat of the controversy, Mr. Kershaw agreed to be interviewed on the subject by a local disc jockey and for one full hour he covered the many fine points of rock 'n' roll on the radio.
The Domino group entered Manchester and the dance was held...without incident.

New Idol Takes Teen-Age Hearts

Big news this week is the sensational volume of orders being wrapped by Capitol records for new star Tommy Sands.
If you saw the Kraft TV show Wednesday on CBUT you know the story; if you didn't you'll be hearing a great deal about Sands and his records in the coming weeks.
The TV presentation was built around a Presley-type character. The kids obviously didn't grasp the message that the story carried and have already started to stampede to newcomer Sands.
Sands is the first person in over a year to threaten the teen-age crown held by "The Pelvis." You're already hearing his big hit "Teenage Crush" on local stations and orders at record stores are piling up.

TEENAGE CRUSH, Tommy Sands, Capitol (number pending); local Capitol dealer is swamped with orders so stand by for a new singer who seems to be ready to take Elvis' place in the hearts of teenagers.

Rock and Roll a Passing Fad, Says Dancer

A prediction that "rock and roll" music would soon fade away like square dancing and the Charleston, was made last night by the former president of the International Council of Ballroom Dancing (Mr. Reginald Clive-Jones).
"I don't blame teenagers for the present popularity of the rock and roll cult," Mr. Clive-Jones said. "I think it is the fault of those who write the music.
"I have seen many beautiful modern dances throughout the world in the past 15 months: many of these--rumbas, waltzes, quicksteps--are gaining tremendously in popularity, but rock and roll is only a passing fad."

Fiery Klan Aide Charged in Klan Shootings
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (UP)--Asa (Ace) Carter fiery leader of the North Alabama White Citizens Council, was charged Wednesday with assault with intent to murder following the shooting of two men at a Ku Klux Klan rally here Tuesday night.
The shooting ocurred late Tuesday night at the headquarters of the North Alabama Citizens Council, which Carter heads as executive secretary. Carter, a former radio announcer, is also an adviser to a Klan group known as the Ku Klux Klan of the Confederacy.
Last spring he spearheaded a drive to discourage rock and roll music in north Alabama and later admitted several of his council members were involved in an incident in which Negro singer Nat King Cole was tackled on a stage of the city auditorium of Birmingham.

Riot Fears Bring About 'Frisco Ban on Gillespie

SAN FRANCISCO--A proposed January 26 booking for jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and his troupe, last week was ruled out by the management of Veterans' Auditorium here.
A building official, explaining the action, said a riot was feared.
William B. Dorsett, general manager of the American Legion War Memorial Commission, told Oakland promoter Manny Schwartz:
"I don't know of Mr. Gillespie and I don't know his kind of music.
"All I know is that I'm there alone with no help and if things get out of hand what can I do?
" If we get jazz in there, then pretty soon it'll be rock 'n' roll and I don't want to be any party to it."

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas--"Rock and Roll" shows were outlawed at Memorial Coliseum and Exposition hall yesterday.
The move, announced by the buildings' manager Tom Davis, came after more than 6000 teenagers attended the Elvis Presley show at Memorial Coliseum Monday night. Davis said many parents and some teen-agers objected to the show. No disturbances were reported.
